History of Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu means “gentle art.” Founded over 200 years ago in India, this ancient art spread to China and then Japan. The samurai utilized this art as their form of combat, without weapons. Mitsuyo Maedo, a master of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu moved to Brazil in the early 1900’s. Gastao Gracie befriended Maeda and in return Maeda passed on this ancient art to Gastao’s eldest son, Carlos.
Carlos taught the art to his brothers, including the youngest and weakest, Helio. Due to Helio’s size, he learned to compensate by modifying the techniques he learned, using skill and leverage, to defend and overtake larger and stronger opponents. Now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, this new art form has changed the martial arts world. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is studied, taught, and appreciated throughout the world. Helio is now 94 years old.
